Age group: 11-13 years

Children love the astonishing pictures of the Italian Mannerist painter Guiseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593, Milan). His unusual portraits, composed of flowers, fruit and animals, trigger creative ideas which inspire new and individual pictures.

MATERIALS

For the task your students need:

Pritt Stick, scissors, ruler, water color box, thick brush, cardboard Din A3, pictures from magazines & travel magazines to the countries of Europe, illustrations of the national flags, sheet protectors for keeping the materials.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    Instructions
      1. Completely prime the A3 cardboard with water color in the blue of the European flag.
      2. Once the color has dried, draw a 3 cm wide frame with a thin pencil and a ruler.
      3. Then, with a thin pencil, draw the half length profile of Zeus or Europe first on a DinA3 trial sheet. Cut out the figure and stencil the figure on the A3 cardboard using a thin pencil. Make sure, the figure is large enough; it should be positioned directly at the lower frame line but there should be some centimetres left to the upper frame line.
      4. Now, draw the details (face, hair, dress, belt, ...) with a thin pencil.
      5. Now the figure is to be "colored" with many little "collage paper shavings" (fruit/vegetables/flowers/animals of the respective country). Try to find the ideal position of the shavings first before you then glue them onto the cardboard with the Pritt Stick. The dress and the hair of the figure should be particularly splendid.
      6. Finally, decorate the frame with scenic and architectural motifs and also include the country's national flag.
      7. Cut out 12 stars and place them in an even (Europe) circle around the head of the figure and glue them onto the cardboard.
