Metropolis 2090 – an utopian skyline as a collage.

Age group: 15-18 years

Innovative modern architecture and multi-faceted skylines visually mark the picture of international metropolises. Students are fascinated by the variety of urbane architecture, in particular the skyscrapers. In a creative way the students can deal with the subject of a fanciful urbane skyline. They create a highly imaginative metropolis for 2090 which present the facets of an international and cultural melting pot.

MATERIALS

For the task your students need:

Pritt Stick, scissors, paper Din A3, colored pictures from magazines, travel magazines, Internet, original photos, scanned and printed out pictures, sheet protectors for keeping the materials.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    Instructions
      1. Find out about different international metropolises and their specific architectural constructions (modern and historical). Study in particular the architectural aesthetics of the worldwide most innovative skyscrapers.
      2. Collect photographic collage material: Colored pictures from magazines, travel magazines, Internet, original photos, scanned and printed out pictures, etc. (you need elements from European and non-European architecture - modern and historical buildings, culture, nature, structures).
      3. Cut out suitable pictures for the background and the river / ocean. The background should form rather a quiet scenery, so that the skyline stands out well. In the lower area of the paper there is a river or ocean about which the skyline rises.
      4. Take the DinA 3 paper crosswise. Stick together the background from single collage parts.
      5. Cut highly imaginative single forms from the pictures for the skyline. Compose the parts anew to fictitious architectural high rises. Pay attention to a skilful and unusual combination of pictures with interesting structures. Thus originate highly imaginative architectures of fictitious skyscrapers. Try out various combinations, before you stick.
      6. Integrate pictures of existing skyscrapers and historical buildings. Bit by bit the skyline of a fictitious "Metropolis in 2090" will come to life.
